Fortune's Favor Solitaire

How to play Fortune's Favor

Fortune's Favor is a one-deck solitaire game of the Forty Thieves family in which the four Aces start on the foundations, twelve single cards are built down in suit, and an emptied pile is refilled from the waste or the stock.

One deck, the Aces on the foundations and twelve piles of one card built down in suit, each emptied pile filled at once from the waste or the stock.

The goal of Fortune's Favor

Move all 52 cards onto the four foundations, one for each suit, each built up from the Ace to the King.

How to set up Fortune's Favor

One standard deck is used. The four Aces are put on the foundations, twelve cards are dealt face up, one to each of twelve piles, and the other 36 form the stock.

Fortune's Favor rules

Piles build down in suit, one rank at a time. Only one card moves at a time, the top card of a pile or of the waste.

When a pile is emptied, the top card of the waste fills it straight away, or the next card of the stock if the waste is empty. Once the stock and the waste are both empty, any card may fill an empty pile.

Turn the stock onto the waste one card at a time, once through with no redeal. Only the top waste card is in play.

A card on a foundation never comes back into play.

Click a card to send it to its foundation, else onto the first pile it builds on, else into an empty pile. Drag it to choose yourself. With Autoplay off in Settings, only a drag moves a card.

How to win at Fortune's Favor

You win when all 52 cards are home. With the stock and waste empty and every pile in order, Auto complete, on by default in Settings, plays the rest for you. The game is stuck when no card can move and the rest of the stock brings up nothing that can.

Fortune's Favor strategy tips

An emptied pile takes the top waste card at once, so emptying a pile is a way to bring a waste card into play when it fits nowhere else. Send a pile's last card home or onto another pile to fill it.

With one deck, every card exists only once, so a card that can go home is never waiting for a copy. Send cards home as soon as they can go, and keep the piles short.

Fortune's Favor questions and answers

How do you play Fortune's Favor solitaire?

Put the four Aces on the foundations, deal twelve cards face up, one to each pile, and keep the other 36 cards as the stock. Build the piles down in suit, one card at a time, and go through the stock once. An emptied pile is filled at once from the waste or the stock. You win when all 52 cards are home.

What is the difference between Fortune's Favor and Forty Thieves?

Fortune's Favor uses one deck rather than two, starts with the four Aces on the foundations and deals twelve piles of one card, and an emptied pile is filled at once from the waste or the stock. Like Forty Thieves, it builds down in suit, moves one card at a time and goes through the stock once.

What happens when a pile is emptied in Fortune's Favor?

It is filled at once with the top card of the waste, or with the next card of the stock if the waste is empty. Only once the stock and the waste are both empty can you choose what goes into an empty pile.

Can every Fortune's Favor deal be won?

Most can. Searching up to a million positions per deal, the game's solver proved all of the first 505 Fortune's Favor deals it tried winnable, most of them in a few milliseconds, though that does not prove every shuffle is. With Winnable on, in the menu beside New deal, each board comes from a list of 500 proved deals. Hint asks the same solver for a winning line before it suggests a move.

Is there a daily Fortune's Favor game?

Yes. Fortune's Favor has a daily board, the same deal for everyone that day, dealt the way a Winnable board is. Log in to play it.
