Backgammon games

Race your checkers around the board and bear them off first.

All four are played with two dice against one computer player. Backgammon starts from the standard position, Nackgammon puts two more checkers deep in your opponent's home board, and Hypergammon is played with three checkers each. Portes is the Greek game with no doubling cube, where a win counts as a gammon at most.

About these games

Each turn you roll two dice and move a checker for each number, or four times on a double. A lone checker on a point can be hit and sent to the bar, and it has to come back in through your opponent's home board before anything else moves. Once all your checkers are in your home board you bear them off, and the first player to bear off every checker wins.

You can play a single game or a match to 3, 5 or 7 points. A single game has no doubling cube; in a longer match the cube can double what a game is worth, and the Crawford rule turns it off for one game when a player comes within a point of winning. Portes never uses the cube. Hypergammon gives the shortest games, and Nackgammon starts you 194 pips from home instead of 167.
